Abdullah ibn Mas’ud reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said during his farewell sermon, “Which month do you believe has the greatest sanctity?” They said, “This month of ours.” He said, “Which
city do you believe has the greatest sanctity?” They said, “This city of ours.” He said, “Which day do you believe has the greatest sanctity?” They said, “This day of ours.” The Messenger of Allah said, “Verily, Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, has made sacred your lives, your wealth, and your honor – except by right of justice – just as your day, your city, and your month is sacred; have I not conveyed the message?” He said it three times and they said, “Yes.” The Messenger of Allah said, “Woe to you (or he said woe betide you); do not return to unbelief after me, striking the necks of each other.”
