Abu Barzah reported: I was with Abu Bakr when he was very angry and he spoke harshly about a man. I said, “O successor to the Messenger of Allah, allow me to strike his neck.” My words made his anger leave and he arose and went inside; then, he sent for me and he said, “What did you say just now?” I said, “Allow me to strike his neck.” He said, “Would you do that if I ordered you?” I said, “Yes.” Abu Bakr said, “No, for by Allah, that is not for any man after Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him.”
Ahmad ibn Hanbal said, “This means that Abu Bakr never killed a man except in one of three cases, as said by the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him: unbelief after faith, adultery after marriage, and retaliation for murder.”
