Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, “The people are like mines of silver and gold; the best of them in ignorance is the best of them in Islam if they have understanding. The
spirits are like conscripted soldiers; thus, whatever they recognize they will agree with, and whatever they do not know they will disagree with.”
[Sahih Muslim, Book 32, Number 6377]
Al-Khattabi said, “The meaning may refer to the similarity of souls in regard to good and evil, righteousness and corruption; that those who do good among the people will incline to those like them, and those who do evil with others will incline to those like them.”
[Ibn Hajar, Fath ul-Bari]
